Expedition Update :
The expedition team have all returned safe and well on Sunday 24th August. The
expedition achieved the objective of building a double classroom block at Lusitu
Community school, Siavonga, Zambia. The team also undertook many activities,
including White Water Rafting, Elephant Back Safari, Quad Biking, Horse Riding
and Helicopter Flights over Victoria Falls. More will be posted soon........
What is it all about?
Julian Sore has been running International Scout and Guides Expeditions for a number of years, mainly to
Uganda (see www.kamuli.org.uk). The
expeditions usually last for 3 to 4 weeks, and the main purpose is to develop UK
Scouts and Guides (14 to 25 year olds) to have a better understanding of third
world countries (see aims and objectives for a full breakdown). After being on 4
expeditions to Uganda (plus 3 pre-visits), it is time to move on to a new
country, hence the new expedition Zambia 2008.
What do we do on an expedition?
The expedition is usually broken down into three sections
a. Acclimatisation - Includes some sight seeing and maybe some
adventure activities such as White Water Rafting / Caving etc.
b. Project Work - This is the main purpose and the main
section of the expedition.
c. Sightseeing and Safari
Community Project Work
The main purpose of the expedition, is to undertake a significant
community project in a very rural location in Zambia.
We have chosen a school, Lusitu Community
School, in the district of Siavonga in Zambia. Siavonga is to the South of the
capital, and edges onto the Zambezi river, and Lake Kariba. Siavonga is
approximately 100 Kms wide, and is a massive area (probably about the size of
Hampshire). Lusitu is roughly in the middle of the district, sitting about
10mins drive off of the main road.
The school has
so far been built and ran by the local community, who live in mud huts. The
school is officially recognised by the educational department, however, it
receives virtually no funding from the educational department. The school
currently educates around 320 pupils in grades 1 to 7 (ages 5 to 12). The school
has one double classroom, which houses G6 and G7, in a straw shelter with poor
brick sides. This classroom block does have chairs and tables donated by Save
the Children. The school then has a triple classroom, which houses G2, G3 and
G5, in a straw shelter with no sides. There are no desks or chairs in this
classroom, with pupils sitting on the floor, or whatever they can find. Grades 1
and 4 share a large tree, with G1 on one side in the morning, and G4 on the
other side in the afternoon.
The school has
a straw round house, which acts as a kitchen, as a maize porridge is provided
for breakfast and lunch to ensure that all of the children eat everyday.
The school has
a single squat toilet, currently built with a wooden floor, and no roof.
However, this is in a very bad state, and is about to fall down.
In terms of a
water supply, there is an existing bore hole, to a depth of 40mtrs. However,
this is the depth of a salt seem, and as a result, all of the water tastes of
salt (OK, to wash with, but that is all). There is also a buried pipe system,
with water centrally pumped from the Zambezi River, and then delivered via a
pipe network (can be up to 20kms). However, this water is not treated in anyway,
and regularly runs dry.
We are planning on completing the following
Providing a clean water supply through an 80mtr deep
bore hole
Providing a new double toilet block
Providing 2 brick built Classrooms
Providing desks and chairs for the Classrooms
Providing Educational and Sports Equipment
The above program of works is budgeted to cost around
£20,000.
Who are the team members?
The team is made up of 19 members of the Scout or Guide Association, aged between 14 and 25 at the
time of the expedition. In addition to this are the 5 members of the Leader Team
(all aged over 25). The members come from Hampshire, Surrey, GLSW, Oxford, East
and West Sussex, making up an England wide team.
Expedition timescales?
The expedition is currently looking to run around late July to mid
August 2008.
Selection Process
We had a very large number of applications (37 in total), and to
reduce this to the 18 for the team, we had to hold a selection weekend in March
2007. This was a very hard process, with some very difficult decisions having to
be made. As a result, the 18 team members that made it into the team should very
much be congratulated for making it this far.
Aims and Objectives of the expedition.
1. To return all team members safe and well to the
UK.
2. To Develop Scouts and Guides from the UK, to have a deep
appreciation of life in a third world country
3. To Develop Scouts and Guides from the UK, to be able to
work together as a team, to understand different peoples needs, and to give
support to all members of the team.
4. To Develop Scout and Guides from the UK to become leaders
of the future.
5. To Develop the assistant leaders from the Leader Team to
become better leaders, and expedition leaders of the future.
6. To complete a community project in a third world country,
that substantially benefits the local community, which they can take ownership
of the project.
7. To develop Scouting and Guiding in the community of the
country we visit.
